Intro to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

November 2, 2014

Come and learn the sequence of the primary series of Ashtanga yoga (Yoga Chikitsa, which means Yoga therapy) progressing through its set sequence of asanas (poses) one by one under the guidance of an experienced yoga teacher.

You will have time to understand and discuss about the alignment and benefits of the poses. You will learn modifications for each pose. There will be time to practice jumping backs and jumping throughs. Workshop includes a print out of the opening prayer and the sequence so you can learn to practice the primary series on your own. There will be a discussion about Mysore style and its philosophy. You will learn the vinyasa count and will start getting familiar with the Sanskrit count and language.

Yoga as a way of life and a philosophy, can be practiced by anyone with inclination to undertake it, for yoga belongs to humanity as a whole. It is not the property of anyone group or any individual, but can be followed by any an all, in any corner of the globe, regardless of class, creed or religion.”
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois

This primary series is considered to be one of the most difficult to learn of all the 6 series. This is because when we come to it we are all beginners, and like any new practice it takes time and commitment.

“Anyone who practices can obtain success in Yoga but not one who is lazy. Constant practice alone is the secret of success”
Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

The postures of the primary series focus on the most common afflictions of Western Life.

Physical limitations:
Short hamstrings, tight hips, spinal misalignments, poor balance, poor posture, and weak abdominal muscles.

Mental Limitations: Flagging will power, lack of mental  focus, weak body mind connection, negative thinking. erroneous beliefs about our lives.
Through practice both the mind and the body are softened together. So, not only does the body become stronger and healthier, but our limiting thought patterns begin to shift too making life easier and filled with unlimited possibilities and joy.
